Sausage and Peperonata Sandwich

It’s common knowledge that I’m a big fan of sandwiches! They’re perfect almost anywhere, for almost every occasion, and I never grow tired of fine-tuning and reinventing them. In this recipe, we’re suggesting a spin on the quintessential hot dog with a joyous Italian touch. Think authentic grilled sausage, arrabbiata sauce, fragrant peperonata, and melted cheese—all nicely nestled in a pillowy bun. Talk about irresistible. Not to brag, but my Italian-Canadian self is pretty proud of this one!

  1. In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic. Cook 3 to 4 minutes stirring regularly to avoid browning.
  2. Add the bell peppers, oregano, salt, and pepper. Partially cover the pan and cook for 15 minutes over low heat, stirring regularly.
  3. Preheat the grill.
  4. Pour the arrabbiata sauce and continue cooking 5 to 7 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat. Salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Grill the sausages according to the instructions on the package.
  6. Line the Toscana buns with the cheese slices. Divide the peperonata among the buns. Add the grilled sausages and top with the mustard. Serve immediately.
