SAUSAGE BURGERS WITH FENNEL SLAW

During BBQ season, you can quickly get tired of the same flavours... I suggest using Italian sausage meat instead of the usual ground beef patty and vary the garnish with fennel! The fennel coleslaw adds a touch of fresh crunch, while the Italian sausage and spices are a welcome change. Italian flavours in an American classic, a winning recipe.

  1.  Combine vinegar, sugar, oil, pepper and salt in a medium bowl, stirring with a whisk until sugar dissolves. 
  2.  Add fennel and onion, tossing to combine.
  3.  Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour, tossing occasionally.

Burgers

  1.  Prepare and warm grill.
  2. Place sausage patties on grill rack coated with cooking spray. Grill 5 minutes on each side.
  3.  Top each patty with 1 slice of cheese; grill 1 to 2 minutes until cheese melts and burgers are cooked.
  4.  Place rolls, cut sides down, on grill rack; grill 1 minute or until toasted.
  5.  Remove slaw with a slotted spoon, arrange about ½ cup slaw on bottom half of each roll; top with patty and finish burger.
