Bicerin

Bicerin

Let us introduce you to hot chocolate’s chic Italian cousin: the bicerin. This coffee-chocolate layered drink was originally invented in Torino, one of northern Italy’s cultural and gastronomical capitals. Its quirky name comes from the local dialect word for bicchierino, meaning “small glass.” Packed with enough caffeine to give us the little push we need, but rich and decadent enough to warm our winter hearts, bicerin is the perfect afternoon treat. This Piedmont specialty seems particularly fitted to our local winter life. Its glass might be small, but its taste is absolutely mighty!

Preparation

  1. Using a hand mixer, beat the heavy whipping cream with the powdered sugar until it forms stiff peaks, about 1 minute.
  2. Warm the milk and melted chocolate over low heat until smooth.
  3. Divide the chocolate-milk mixture evenly between 4 small glasses.
  4. Gently pour the hot espresso evenly between the 4 glasses, pouring it over the back of a spoon to create a second layer.
  5. Top carefully with the lightly whipped cream, keeping the layers distinct.
  6. Garnish with grated chocolate or powdered cocoa and serve immediately, without stirring—traditionally enjoyed as is. Salute!
