Bombardino Cocktail

Cocktail Bombardino

We dare you to find a more festive, decadent or comforting winter cocktail. The bombardino is a Lombardy icon, an undeniable mood and temperature booster made for those days spent outside in the snow. The traditional recipe calls for a creamy egg liquor that, unfortunately, can’t really be found in Canada. But do not worry! We went back to basics and settled on a fragrant eggnog-style sabayon. Homemade eggnog is actually quite easy to prepare, but if you’re in a rush to get that first sip, grocery store eggnog will do the trick. And if you’re feeling a little tired, go ahead and add a shot of espresso. You’ll then create what the Italians call a Calimero. Whatever you decide, the bombardino will always be the bomb!

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture is pale and thick.
  2. In a saucepan, gently warm the milk, cream, vanilla, and nutmeg over medium heat until steaming (do not boil).
  3. Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the eggnog, whisking constantly.
  4. Return everything to the saucepan and continue to warm gently over low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 5 to 7 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and divide the hot beverage into 4 heatproof glasses.
  6. Add 50 ml of brandy or rum into each glass, stir gently, and top with the whipped cream.
  7. Finish with a light dusting of the cinnamon or cocoa powder. Salute!
