Our 10 most popular recipes in 2023

Sure, we have a lot of great recipes, but we were curious — which ones stood out last year?

Here’s a roundup of our 10 most popular recipes in 2023. From the unbeatable spaghetti carbonara to family gems like my mom Elena’s simple tomato sauce, and the oh-so-comforting veal parmigiana, this list is proof that the classics are always in style.

My mom is proud to share her classic tomato sauce recipe, after all: that's what cooking's for! It has been passed down from generation to generation — I literally grew up with this sauce — and now we're passing it on to you.

Elena’s simple tomato sauce

My mom is proud to share her classic tomato sauce recipe, after all: that’s what cooking’s for! It has been passed down from generation to generation — I literally grew up with this sauce — and now we’re passing it on to you. Use this basic tomato sauce as the foundation to many Italian dishes.

Margherita pizza

Margherita pizza, the art of simplicity! Pizza is hands-down my favourite dish. I could eat it 24/7 and never get tired of it. It’s such a fantastic dish… it’s like a work of art. The dough is a blank canvas, which you can colour with any toppings you like. I’m a purist at heart so I love the simplicity of Margherita, just like my son!

Meatballs always remind me of high school lunches. My mom used to make them the night before and put them on sandwiches, topped with iceberg lettuce and pickled eggplant. This recipe from my partner Michele uses equal parts veal and cheese. It’s a totally decadent version my teenage self would have loved!

Italian wedding soup

No, zuppa di matrimonio isn’t just for weddings, though it was first served during such occasions in Pittsburgh, it’s now known all over. The green vegetables and meat “si sposano bene”, meaning that they go really well together. Make it on any occasion, big or small. Even if this soup won’t guarantee a happily ever after, there are still plenty of things to love about it.

At a time when meat was scarce, they used to tenderize it to make it look as if there was more to eat. Each slice of veal (or you can use chicken) is coated with flour, egg, and breadcrumbs then fried to a crispy exterior and a tender interior. Served with tomato sauce, prosciutto slices, and cheese.
As soon as my Nonna Angela prepared this soup at home, I knew that fall was well underway. The zucchini's comforting flavour is supported by the freshness of the basil. Easy to make, easy on the wallet and keeps well in the freezer for later use.

Spaghetti carbonara

One of Rome’s most famous pasta dishes, spaghetti carbonara is a mythical dish, a classic in Roman trattorias. Creamy perfection, feel free to use bacon instead of guanciale and don’t forget to save some of the cooking water, that’s the secret to it’s magical texture!

The best of both worlds on a single plate. If you like rosée sauce and meat sauce, this recipe is for you. A mixture of pork and beef, garlic, cream, and tomato sauce. Definitely a dish to let gently simmer and warm up the house on a cold winter's day.

Mushroom risotto

Don’t let the ingredient list or the steps deter you, this risotto is much simpler than it looks. Adding porcini is a real olfactory treat; it’s an ingredient that elevates a dish, adding depth, and blends well with the creaminess of the risotto.
